Have you ever hated something so much that it hurts? The pain unbearable and nothing, absolutely nothing makes it go away?  Have you ever felt like you just want to rip your heart out and bury it deep beneath the earth, just so that you don’t feel the ache in it anymore?  Have you ever felt so lost because the one person in your life who loved you NO MATTER WHAT, was no longer physically there to hear you when you called?  No longer there to hug you when you needed a huge bear hug??  That is what October 19 does to me.  (more…)

Being a Parent & a Friend

My oldest daughter is and has always been a really good kid.  She is 14 (almost 15), very bright, a good student and makes good decisions.  We talk a lot.  We talk about things that happen in her life, the choices she faces and makes, her school work, her music, her crushes.  I am proud to say that she really impresses me at times with her wisdom.

Tonight we went out to dinner, the whole family. Of course the three kids all started talking at once and telling us about their days.  My youngest held up her hand and suggested we use a fork as a “talking stick” (from Yours Mine & Ours).  My son instantly piped up with “No, you need to have like 16 kids to have one of those.” Meanwhile, my oldest and I share a laugh because OMG!  This “talking stick” conversation did however lead to everyone taking turns to speak. We heard lots of stories through dinner.   (more…)

The new changes in my life require a bit more discipline on my part, particularly getting to bed at a decent hour.  If the blog name doesn’t tell you, I have frequent bouts of insomnia and have been a night owl since I was a kid.   Some of you readers really know, as I have chatted with you until the wee hours at times.  Sometimes greeting the next day with as little as 3 hours sleep and feeling it. Football and cheerleading season have finally begun!  This is my son’s 3rd year, 2nd playing for the “B” league Oarsmen.  It is my daughter’s 3rd year cheering for the “C” league Huskies. (Pictures are from 2006 season.)

Today we had our first team meeting for my son’s football team. Go  Oarsmen!  There we were, all 21 boys, their siblings and parents, in one very brave Mom’s kitchen for the “get to know everyone” meeting.  Mrs. “S” was very kind to open her house, swimming pool, and serve wonderful refreshments to all of those very active 10-12 year old boys and their little brothers and sisters.   It turned out to be a great get together.  All the details that we had so far were shared and I was introduced as the team Mom.   Mrs. “S” was team mom last year, so I immediately enlisted her help.  She and I worked well together before, so this year with some experience under our belts, it should be no problem.  (more…)

It all began in the Spring of 2004.  My oldest daughter came home from school one day and said that she wanted to play an instrument in the school band.  I instantly thought of myself at that age and when I told my dad that I wanted to play the alto saxophone.  He obliged me, having played in the band in school, too.  I, though, did not stick with it and soon gave it up.    (more…)

Why? Is it just me?

Why is it always this way? Is it just me and my life, or does it happen to you too?   A lot of parents are busy these days with work, multiple children and life in general.  They have to be in two places at once and it’s an endless cycle juggling the kids and everything else Mom and Dad have to do.  It’s good for your kids though, the sports, staying after school for clubs, volunteering, etc. It helps to build character and discipline. They learn teamwork and what it means to be a part of something.   (more…)
