Perspective Of Yet Another Night Owl

Here’s what I have been up to lately…

It’s been a couple of weeks since I quit my job, and believe it or not, I have managed to fill up the 60 hours a week that I had on my hands.  I have managed to get my house in some assemblence of order (although there is still stuff to be done).  I have started some gardening (which was desperately needed), treated myself (hair cut, color, high-lights, mani- and pedicure), had lunch with friends and family, and spent time with the husband.  The husband and I also planted 2 dwarf pear trees in our yard.  Can’t wait for them to bear fruit.

We took a mini camping trip this past weekend which was a lot of fun.  The kids participated in a ton of activities at the camp ground.  My youngest daughter won a scavenger hunt and made a tye-dye t-shirt.  (more…)

Susan G. Komen National Race For The Cure® on June 7, 2008!!

As you all know, my Mom was diagnosed with Breast Cancer last year.  Since then, I have been trying to find ways to support the fight against breast cancer.   Recently, I accepted the challenge (thanks Mom) to support the fight against breast cancer by participating in Susan G. Komen National Race for the Cure® on June 7, 2008 in Washington, DC.  Mom and I will be walking (definately not running) with the BCL Breast Center of Loudoun team.

Please join me by pledging to support my participation in the Susan G. Komen National Race for the Cure®. The generosity of our donors is vital as we continue our efforts to help breast cancer patients today, as well as to invest in the health of future generations. It is easy to support this great cause. You can make a pledge online by simply clicking on the link to my personal pledge page at the bottom of this post. If you would prefer there is also a downloadable form to send in pledges through the mail. Any contribution amount will make a difference in the lives of many!! I (and my Mom) truly appreciate your generosity and will keep you posted on my progress.

Thank you so much for your time and support in the fight against breast cancer. Best protection is early detection!

Here’s the latest…..

I feel as if I have neglected you!!!  I tend to keep in touch with a lot of my family and friends through this blog.  I have been extremely busy these last couple of weeks, but then at the same time, feel like I probably could have made the extra time for keeping in touch.

Next week is my oldest daughter’s 15th birthday.  It’s hard to believe that she is almost a sophmore in high school.  I am not sure what her plans are this year for her birthday.  She has gone back and forth on gifts and party ideas, etc.  She just doesn’t know what she wants.  Oh well, when she decides she will let me know and then we will take care of it then.

My husband’s birthday is the following week.  We are also planning a super bowl party for some friends of ours.  A bring a dish kind of thing, very casual.  Between all the birthdays and the super bowl, the next couple of weeks look like they will be busy too.

I had done some research recently on the 3 Day Walk for the cure for Breast Cancer.  I have 4 ladies who all would love to walk the 60 miles with  me. (more…)

I know everyone has been waiting for an update, so here it is.  I took my Mom in for her follow-up appointment today.  This appointment was with her reconstructive surgeon.  Mom will see her breast cancer surgeon for follow-up on Wednesday.  I couldn’t have been happier than I was today, so please read the details here.  This looks like the makings of a success story.  (more…)

Mom’s surgery…

Tuesday night was spent mostly in anticipation of my mother’s upcoming surgery on October 10.   It had been a while since my brother, sister and I had hung out without any children or spouses, so of course, we took slight advantage of that.  We visited with Grandpa and Mom until they fell asleep.  Then the three of us “kids” snuck out to have a couple of drinks and settle our nerves.  Ok, and well, we needed to have a little fun, too.  Things were kind of serious at home.  It turned out to be a late night for us.  My brother having to go to work the next morning, and sister and I having to get up early with Mom and Grandpa.  We probably should have turned in earlier the night before, but well, shit happens.

Wednesday morning rolled around quite early.  My sister and I got my grandfather’s day started and made his lunch and got ready to take Mom to the hospital.  We got Mom registered around noon.  None of us had anything to eat or drink so Mom wouldn’t be alone in that.  Of course, we were all thirsty and starving. Hey there everyone.  I have been so busy lately getting everyone’s schedules arranged so that I can be there for my Mom’s mastectomy surgery tomorrow.  I checked in this morning and wanted to thank all of you who have been thinking about us and sending prayers, so thank you.  Anyone who has left a message wanting information, I will try to get that to you later tonight.  Again, thank you all for your prayers and well wishes.  Tomorrow is the big day and I will let you all know how things go.  Hugs to all!

Breast Reconstruction After Mastectomy

Mom and I went and spoke with the reconstructive surgeon today.  I ended up having many more questions than I expected because the procedure wasn’t how I expected it to be.  We had been told that when Mom has the mastectomy that reconstructive surgery would be done at the same time.  I guess we envisioned Mom going to sleep, having one removed, then waking up with a whole “new” set.  It’s not quite that simple. Coffee & Quiet Mornings

Today I could have slept in.  I have the morning off and don’t need to be at work until about 1:00 PM.  So, what did I do?? I woke up at 7:00 AM, got some coffee and watched all the kids get off to school.  No sleeping in for me.  Must be the new schedule that prohibits slacking mornings Monday through Friday.  My hubby left at 8:30 AM for an estimate.  He doesn’t work outside the house very often anymore, so this was a nice little surprise for me.  The house is empty, all except for me, the dog and cat.  It has been so long since I have had the house all to myself, I forgot how quiet it can be.

I am going to the doctor’s this morning with my mom.  We will be having a pre-op appointment with Dr. Parva, the surgeon my Mom will be using for her mastectomy reconstruction.  You can check out his website at: http://www.bodyenhancement.com .  Hopefully, we can get answers about the reconstruction.  I am not so worried about the reconstruction as I am about getting rid of the breast cancer, but the cancer questions are for the oncologist.  (more…)

Today brought some great news!

A few weeks ago, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer.  The doctor had found 1 lump through a regularly scheduled mamogram, did a biopsy, and the result was malignant.  My mom then underwent an MRI of both breasts.  The MRI confirmed the left breast was completely clear, but the right breast actually had 3 lumps.  The 2 new lumps being larger than the original lump found.  The doctor took biopsies of the 2 new lumps that the MRI discovered.  Today those test results are in.  The great news is, the 2 new lumps are benign!  Woo Hoo!

Mom is still planning on having a mastectomy with reconstructive surgery.  Her pre-op appointment is next Friday, where she will find out exactly what is involved with this procedure.  The hope is that this will be the end of the breast cancer and she will not have to go through chemo or radiation treatments.  Thank you, everyone, for all the prayers.  I know it is helping, as we have been blessed already with this new information.

Family & Work Lately

It’s about time for an update on the goings on around me.  My son has had 2 football games so far.  The first game found his team up against last year’s championship winner.  There were a few mistakes, the boys never gave up and played hard, but they took a loss.  The second game proved to have fewer mishaps, just as much heart, a touchdown, but still resulted in a loss.  Now we have the 2 toughest games out of the way, so hopefully the season will turn around a bit. Life’s Challenges, Balance, Ups & Downs

Sometimes in life, you score a touch down. Sometimes you fumble or complete the pass for an extra yard or two.  Lately, I have had a bit of it all.  This is the latest going on with me.

My most recent touchdown was going back to work as a general manager for Papa Johns.  I am extremely busy with work and coaching, family and life.  I am constantly “on the go”, but I am totally loving it!  The staff members that were at PJs when I took over are pretty cool and so far my new hires are working out.

The family is adjusting to the changes day by day. We have had a few shaky passes over the last couple of weeks, but we are completing the passes.  Compromise, balance and working together are the key.  (more…)
